assay of Keilin and Hartree (Biochem. J. (London), 42, 230, 1948) was used to measure initial and residual sugar in the carbon balance studies. Total carbon was determined by the wet carbon oxidation method (Van Slyke et al., J. Biol. Chem., 191, 299, 1951), and carbon assimilation into polysaccharide and cellular material was estimated from wet carbon oxidation of the culture samples after dialysis. As ordinarily cultivated, the lag phase of A. indicum extends over a period of 6 to 7 days; such

Chloramphenicol resistance in Micrococcus pyogenes. III. Antagonism of drug action and stimulation of growth by complex substances.

In a previous communication (Ramsey and Padron, 1954) it was noted that Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus failed to develop resistance to chloramphenicol in a synthetic medium whereas resistant strains were readily obtained by cultivation in complex medium (Bacto-A. C. broth) containing this antibiotic. Further, the resistant strains so isolated showed a wide variation in drug tolerance, their r...

Chloramphenicol Resistance in Micrococcus Pyogenes

In an earlier report from this laboratory (Wilson and Ramsey, 1955) an antagonism between chloramphenicol and complex materials (yeast extract, proteose peptone #3) was noted. It was suggested that the antagonism observed was possibly due to stimulation of growth, rather than to direct antagonism of the antibiotic. In order to examine more critically the respective roles of stimulation and dire...

Properties of the penicillin binding component of Micrococcus pyogenes.

The antibiotic effect of penicillin on bacterial cells is known to involve the inhibition of a process necessary for cell division but not primarily connected with respiration (Florey et al., 1949). Previous work in which the primary bacteriostatic action of penicillin has been apparently identified with a disturbance in amino acid (Gale, 1952) or nucleotide metabolism (Gros and Macheboeuf, 195...

The assimilation of amino acids by bacteria. 19. The inhibition of phenylalanine incorporation in Staphylococcus aureus by chloramphenicol and p-chlorophenylalanine.

In the previous paper of this series (Gale & Folkes, 1953c) it was shown that incubation of washed suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus (Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus) with glucose and [14C]glutamic acid resulted in incorporation of the labelled glutamic acid into the protein fraction of the cells. This process occurred in the absence of demonstrable protein synthesis and underwent considera...

Antibiotic sensitivity of Micrococcus radiodurans.

A wild-type strain of Micrococcus radiodurans and its nonpigmented mutant W(1) were tested for sensitivity to 10 antibiotics selected from the standpoint of their mechanism of action. Representatives of groups of antibiotics inhibiting deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis, DNA-dependent ribonucleic acid synthesis, protein synthesis, and cell wall synthesis were selected. M. radiodurans and its...
